Docker containers, Homebrew services and Herd sites, by name
A port list full of com.docker.backend and postgres tells you nothing. These say which container, which formula, which site.
In short
A Docker port shows its container name and image instead of Docker’s proxy, and Stop or Restart act on the container. Homebrew services show their formula and stop with brew services stop, so they stay stopped. Herd and Valet’s nginx row lists your .test sites.

Stacks 1
Docker
- Docker Desktop, OrbStack and Colima listen through a proxy process; the row shows the container behind it, like
web · nginx:latest. - Stop runs
docker stop, Restart runsdocker restart, and the inspector followsdocker logs. - Portlivo only asks Docker when one of its processes is listening, so it costs nothing when Docker is off.
Homebrew and launchd services
- Postgres, Redis, MySQL and other services show their Homebrew formula.
- Killing a launchd service only makes it respawn, so Stop uses
brew services stop(orlaunchctl bootout) and Restart useslaunchctl kickstart. - Databases from DBngin or Postgres.app show up as servers too.
Herd and Valet sites
Your .test sites are read from Herd or Valet’s own config. Their nginx row has a Sites menu, and the window shows them in a grid, with https for the secured ones.
Herd serves the sites; Portlivo shows everything else. See Portlivo vs Herd.
Questions people ask
- Does it need Docker Desktop?
- No. It uses the docker command from Homebrew, /usr/local/bin or OrbStack, whichever you have.
- Will Stop Visible stop my database?
- No. Stop Visible skips containers and services; stop those one at a time from their row.
