In short
While the panel or window is open, Portlivo sends each web server a plain GET / and colours it by the answer: 2xx green, redirects teal, 4xx orange, 5xx red. It shows the response time and, in the window, a live thumbnail of the page. You can probe /health or any other path instead.
How it checks
- A raw HTTP request over TCP to localhost, with a 1.5 second timeout. Only a real
HTTP/1.xstatus line counts, so a database port is never mistaken for a website. - Redirects aren’t followed, so a probe never leaves your Mac.
- Each probe is a real request in your server’s own log, so a port is probed at most every 30 seconds, and only while you’re looking.
- Response times over a second show in orange.
A custom health path
If / is slow or needs a login, set the path in the inspector’s health section: /health, /up (Laravel 11) or anything starting with a slash. It’s remembered per port.
Live previews
Each server that answers with a page gets a thumbnail in the window. Portlivo loads it in a hidden web view, one server at a time, at most once a minute, and only while the window is open. Error pages aren’t captured. Turn previews off in Settings → Website previews.
Questions people ask
- Will the checks show up in my server’s log?
- Yes, as an ordinary GET request, at most every 30 seconds per port and only while the panel or window is open. Point the check at a cheap path if that’s noisy.
- Does it check HTTPS?
- It sends plain HTTP to localhost. A server that only speaks HTTPS shows as not HTTP, and Portlivo doesn’t guess.
