Live logs for your dev servers, in the inspector

Which terminal tab was the queue worker in? With live logs, you don’t need to know.

In short

Select a server in the Portlivo window and the inspector shows the end of its output, updating every second: Portlivo’s own log for commands it started, docker logs for containers, or storage/logs/laravel.log for a Laravel project. Errors are tinted red and warnings amber. Show Logs opens the same log in a window of its own.

Where the lines come from

ServerLogRefreshes
Started by Portlivo (a stack or a restart)Portlivo’s log file for that commandEvery second
A Docker containerdocker logs --tail 300Every 3 seconds
A Laravel projectstorage/logs/laravel.logEvery second

A window for each log

Choose Show Logs from a row’s menu, or double-click the log in the inspector. The window follows the log live in the server’s own terminal colours, with a coloured edge on error and warning lines. Each log gets one window: asking again brings it forward.

  • Filter shows only the lines that contain what you type.
  • Errors and Warnings hides everything else.
  • Pause holds the view while you read, and Copy copies the lines shown.
  • Wrap Lines switches between wrapped lines and one line each.

Servers you started in your own terminal

Their output goes to that terminal, and no other app can read it. Choose Restart to Capture Logs from the row’s menu: Portlivo restarts it with the same arguments and environment, and its output lands in the log from then on.

The details

  • The inspector keeps the last 400 lines, with the colour codes Vite, Laravel and Docker print stripped out; the window keeps 3,000, in colour.
  • Pause holds the view while you read; Open in Console opens the whole file.
  • Log files always open in Console, never in their default app, and only plain files are read, so a project can’t point the log at something else.

Questions people ask

Can I see logs from the menu bar?
Yes. The row’s ⋯ menu has Show Logs, which opens the log in its own window.
