Stacks: start a whole project in one click
A Laravel app is a server, a queue worker and Vite. A stack starts all three with one click, from the folder you already have.
In short
Choose Stacks → New from Folder… and pick a project. Portlivo lists the commands that start it, with a normal dev session already ticked. Save it, and Start runs every command that isn’t running yet, each in a login shell from the project folder.
- php artisan serve
- docker compose up redis
~/Code/billing-api
What it finds in a folder
It reads the project’s own files and suggests the commands they imply. Nothing runs until you press Create Stack.
| File | Suggests |
|---|---|
Procfile.dev or Procfile | Every line, as written |
composer.json with a dev script | composer run dev (Laravel 11 and later: server, queue and Vite together) |
artisan | php artisan serve and php artisan queue:work |
package.json | Its dev, start, serve or watch script, run with npm, pnpm, yarn or bun to match the lockfile |
bin/dev or bin/rails | bin/dev, or bin/rails server |
manage.py | python3 manage.py runserver |
go.mod | go run . |
docker-compose.yml or compose.yaml | docker compose up, left unticked |
A Procfile wins: when there is one, it’s what gets ticked, because it lists exactly what the project runs.
Or save what’s already running
Started everything by hand this morning? Right-click any running server from the project and choose Save as Stack. Every command running from that folder goes in, with its exact arguments.
What happens when you press Start
- Commands that are already running are skipped, so pressing Start twice doesn’t start two of anything.
- Each command runs in a login shell from the project folder, so the PATH from your shell profile (nvm, Herd, Homebrew) applies.
- Output goes to Portlivo’s log for that command, which the inspector shows live. See live logs.
- If a command can’t start because its port is taken, a notification names the holder and offers Kill Holder & Retry. See port conflicts.
Where it is in Portlivo
- Open the window and go to Stacks, then New from Folder….
- Saved stacks also sit at the top of the menu bar panel, each with a Start button.
- Press ⌘K and type the stack’s name to start it from the keyboard.
Questions people ask
- Can I stop a whole stack at once?
- Not as one button. Search for the project so only its servers show, then use Stop Visible: it asks once and stops everything in the list.
- Does it change my project files?
- No. Portlivo only reads them to suggest commands. The stack is saved in Portlivo’s own settings.
